Diggers With Gratitude: DWG-009 ft. Tragedy

Surprise, Surprise. Shortly after DWG announced their latest 7" release here is the next heavy hitter!!!

QB primary rock Tragedy aka The Intelligent Hoodlum releases the "Black Rage Demos" on Diggers With Gratitude. Three previously unreleased tracks from Tragedy's 25 To Live imprint. Check out the words of DWG head RareDave:

"Many of you will have heard the original versions of "Death Row" and "At Large" - well, the opportunity arose for us to get involved in a 25 To Life approved pressing of these tracks, plus the previously unheard demo of "Pump The Funk". These original versions were due to appear on Trag's unreleased/controversial 2nd album "Black Rage" (1992), but A&M Records got cold balls and decided to change the title to "Saga Of A Hoodlum"(1993) change the tracklist and remix some of the tracks (we have put the 3 previously available album 'remixes' on the flip). The "Black Rage Demos" are sought after (previously only available as crusty dubs from Westwood's Capital Rap Show) and production wise are closer to Trag's earlier work, the depressing original mix of "Death Row" is genius and the venomous production of the original "At Large" is nothing short of amazing - Trag holds no bars. The original "Pump The Funk" (this was originally named "Shit For Your System") is totally different to the final version with a stripped back beat for the jeeps."

The EP is limited to 250 copies while the first 75 orders get a marbled red vinyl and a sleeve signed by Tragedy himself.

No Sleep: NSR2LP-001 ft. Nick Wiz

Once again my man DL is back on da scene and presents Nick Wiz - Cellar Selections Vol. 1. Here is a part of DL's annoucement:

"Nick Wiz has been a Hip-Hop mainstay since his teenage years. Having first impacted the early 90's scene with his beat contributions to Ecko Unlimited Underground Airplay cassette series; Nick's sound was a considerable part of the early Lyricist Lounge movement. This continued into working with Lounge alum, The Cella Dwellas, as well as the likes of Rakim, Chubb Rock, Mad Skillz, Channel Live and countless others. Producing in his own studio, appropriately named The Cellar, his sound was a unique fusion of filters, horns, smacking SP-1200 drums and dense bass-lines. With round the clock recording sessions, Nick's studio was constantly flooded with both Hip-Hop's elite talent and the best of the underground scene as well. While a lot of the material produced and recorded by him found its way to full-length CD releases, countless other tracks were unreleased; only heard on underground radio shows and rare demos. This release focuses mostly on the mid-90s demos from the first 2CD, specifically the highly sought after Lyricist Lounge Underground Airplay tracks and the rare Stretch and Bobbito demos that have never been on vinyl. This release is the first of two Cellar Selections 2LPs, as the second will be released in early 2011 and will mostly feature tracks from Cellar Sounds Vol. 2" with a few leftovers from Vol. 1.

SNIPPET RECORD 1
SNIPPET RECORD 2

Limiited to 250 copies No Sleep follows the asking of record collectors to release the Nick Wiz CD release on vinyl. The record sold out in not time so if you're interested in Vol. 2 you better be on the look out.

My special thanks goes out to Nick, DL and No Sleep Recordings. All rights reserved by the label.

Solid Ground: MC Googly, Poison Ladd and Beats In General

Poison Ladd S.L.R. and Beats In General come around with their next Solid Ground installments.

The double release will feature MC Googley's "The Ghetto Soldiers EP" (96) and Poison Ladd S.L.R. & Beats In General featuring Black Pussy bw. Red Wagon (92/93).

Mc Googly aka William Daniels ("The Public Enemy Of Philly") born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa. (North Philly) in 1967, moved to the logan section of Philadelphia in 1980, where he first witnessed hip hop at its finest. We’re talking 2 Turntables and a microphone. Well known Dj’s like Disco Rat, Disco Poo Sex Machine, would be off the hook with performances, with rappers, and rap groups. His study of the rap game had him rapping at the early age of 13 sounding just as good as the older rappers. In 1983 he met Ronald Potts known then as Mc Rockwell aka Poison Ladd at Olney Highschool in Philadelphia where the challenge each other to take there skills to the next level. Shortly after, they met Wayne Rhoads know then as Big which they later named Extortionist B aka Beats In General and they formed a group "Boys Of Doom" they produced a sound that still today is ringing in the public ear. They were considered one of the hottest groups in philly at that time, but still no shine in 1984. In 1987 the Boys Of Doom had to part due to Mc Googly’s incarceration which he did a 2 year sentence. His incarceration helped him perfect his rap skills, Mc Googly returned to the group B.O.D. in 1989 and recorded several solo songs but violated his parole and returned right back to prison until 1992. By then B.O.D. was no more, and Ronald Potts, & Wayne Rhoads became Poison Ladd S.L.R. – Beats In General., so Mc Googly moved on as a solo artist recording various hip hop songs throughout the 90’s. We hope you enjoy the many lost treasures of Mc Googly, One of the illest Mc’s of philly. The record is limited to 300 copies.

Mastering Studios: Check The Run-Out Grooves

An outrider to contribute information about run-outs of hip-hop records is "Dig-It-Out". Please check it out! Also check in here!

MASTERDISK

Masterdisk has been in business since 1973, mastering vinyl, CDs and high-resolution digital formats for many of the world's greatest artists. Have you considered joining the recent vinyl revival? Masterdisk is one of only a few companies worldwide that has been continuously making masters for vinyl. We have more experience cutting masters than nearly any other facility. Before digital, vinyl record mastering was Masterdisk's sole business, and we were at the top of the heap. Producers would fly to New York from England on the Concord Jet just to have their records mastered at Masterdisk. We are very proud of that heritage and master vinyl records with great attention to detail. [source: www.masterdisk.com]

SPECIALTY

Specialty Records Corporation was founded in 1946. Warner Bros. Records took over in 1978, but kept the Specialty name up until 1996, when they changed it to WEA Mfg. Vinyl production was discontinued January 01 2002, to clear floorspace for their rising DVD production.

Specialty pressed some singles and promos in the early nineties. They etched a stamped SRC logo into the lacquers they received. It does not appear that they had an in-house mastering studio, lots of releases they pressed were cut by MASTERDISK. [source]

Liberty Grooves: From Past 2 Present

As promised in my last post here is a little overview on previous "Liberty Grooves" releases. Liberty Grooves was a record shop and label based in South London. The debut single "An Original Break" by Solid 'N' Mind (Rapper Whirlwind D, Producer Johnny F and Beatboxer MSD) was release in 1990 followed by LIB002 ft. True Style.

In 1994 Liberty Grooves released the legendary Gutter Snypes EP "The Trials Of Life" in different versions and different coloured vinyls. Make your own decision what cat-no. you like but you better buy the whole collection! (peace 2 Sigher)

The biggest story and one of the rarest and most thought after records is cat.-no LIB009. I just say Akinyele ft. Kool G Rap - Break A Bitch Neck. Check out the best review from my friends of DWG, nuff said!

In 2009 Liberty Grooves gave their comeback with a limited edition (250 copies) release of "Solid 'N' Mind - Centre Stage bw. Woke With Nothin". Both tracks were recorded in 1991 and released on cassette only before they got pressed on vinyl. The cat.-no. LIB21/2.

Their latest installement please check here.

Liberty Grooves: Battle Tipped Rhyme ft. Solid 'N'Mind

About 6 months ago my man Dudley was flicking through some old cassettes and found another Solid n Mind track that Johnny and him had been working on. Anyway, all he had was the original instrumental and the words on a scrappy piece of paper! Having shared a bit of it on Cro’s Main Ingredient Show and discussed re-recording it with various heads (they never properly recorded it, however it was a Liberty Grooves staple in the many freestyle sessions they had at the shop and in other places!), they have decided to record it as it would have been had we released it back in the day.

It has cat no lib003 ½ to fit in where it would have featured at the time, ie after Takin’ Liberties LP and before The Gutter Snipes EP. Included on the twelve are the vocal, inst and acapella as well as the original vintage 1991 instrumental recording straight from the cassette!

Sound Sample

As you can see, there is a black and white picture cover, as this is where they were in 1992 with Liberty Grooves releases (front cover shown). As well as this, there will be an insert with a new Liberty logo/artwork by Johnny F as well as the full Liberty Grooves discography and a history of the label. Finally, a press release will be included with the project. There will be 250 numbered copies never to be repressed.

A1: Battle Tipped Rhyme (Vocal)
A2: Battle Tipped Rhyme (Instrumental)
B1: Battle Tipped Rhyme (Acappella)
B2: Battle Tipped Rhyme (Original 1991 Instrumental)

To show you what these guys and Liberty Grooves did in the past I will add some further Liberty Grooves shit with the next posts. Big up!

My special thanks goes out to Dudley and Johnny F. All copyrights by Liberty Grooves.
